Ships and Boats in Stamps: Philatelic Auction Roundup

1. Bahrain - 1970 - Mint Never Hinged Dhows of the Arabian Gulf - Block of Eight - #270a (370737886621): A very collectible block of eight stamps of Bahrain issued on June 16, 1979 showing eight different designs of dhows of the Arabian Gulf. The featured dhows are Ghanja, Zarook, Shu'ai, Jaliboot, Baghla, Sambuk, Boom, and Kotia. The block catalogs for around $80 MNH or Used. 
2. Great Britain - 1993 - Canal Boats Set - British Canals Bicentennial - Mint Never Hinged (370740050970): A set of four stamps issued on July 20, 1993 for the British Canals Bicentennial. The stunningly colorful set of stamps (Scott #1506 to #1509) in four different designs feature Grand Junction Canal Boats, Stainforth and Keadby Canal, Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal Boats, and Crinan Canal, steamers and fishing boats. 
3. Danzig - 1921 - Hanseatic Trading Ship - Constitution Set of Ten (290847544090): A set of ten stamps (Scott #49 to #58) issued on January 31, 1921 in honor of the constitution. The beautiful set distributed in two sizes is somewhat rare to be found in Never Hinged condition. Such sets catalog in the $80 range. Mint and Used sets that are hinged can be had for around $20. Certain proof varieties with inverted centers and 'Center Red' color varieties are known to exist. Imperforate varieties also exist and they generally catalog in the same range. 
4. Saint Thomas and Prince Islands - 1982 - Navigator Ships Set of Six - First Day Used on Maxi Cards (390527985395): A set of six stamps (Scott #671, #672a-d, and #673) in the "Explorers and their Ships" theme issued on December 21, 1981 along with a souvenir sheet featuring a scene that depicts the Departure of Marco Polo from Venice. The designs of the original set are Thor Heyerdahl and the Kon-tiki, Magellan and the Carrack, Drake and the Golden Hind, Columbus and the Santa Maria, Leif Eriksson and the Viking longship, and Captain Cook and the Endeavor. The set catalogs for around $15 and the souvenir sheet can be had for around the same price. 
5. Australia/Ireland - 1999 - Souvenir Sheet Mint Never Hinged (370740057622): A souvenir sheet released for the Philexpo-1999, Australia as a joint issue featuring Irish and Australian stamps in the ship theme. The joint issue has the inscription "Maritime Links - Australia and Ireland - Polly Woodside". Polly Woodside is an Irish built (in Belfast) three-masted iron-hulled barque that is the most prominent display at the South Wharf precinct of Melbourne, Australia. 
6. New Zealand - Ross Dependency - Explorers and their Ships - Set of Six (200882068918): The Ross Dependency (Antarctic Territory) set of six stamps features the following explorers and ships with denominations varying from 40c to $1.80. The designs feature Captain Cook with Resolution and Adventure (1772 to 1775), Ross with Erebus and Terror (1839 to 1843), Amundsen with Fram (1910 to 1912), Scott with Terra Nova (1910 to 1912), Shackleton with Endurance (1914 to 1916), and Byrd with Floyd Bennett Sea Plane (1928 to 1930). New Zealand issued Ross Dependency philatelic stamps from 1957 to 1987 and one set annually since 1994. They are processed by the Ross Dependency Agency located at a Post Office in Christchurch. Cancellation inscriptions read "Ross Dependency Agency, Christchurch". 
7. Portugal Madeira - 1980 - Souvenir Sheet with Mint Never Hinged Stamp on Stamps with a maritime background (400391971641): Stamp on Stamps design Souvenir Sheet featuring the first stamps of Madeira (King Luiz stamps of Portugal overprinted Madeira issued on January 1, 1868). The background picture shows a boat, several ships, and a rock and has the inscription "Madeira 1868-1980". Madeira is a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Africa and is considered an integral part of Portugal since 1898. Prior to that, Madeira overprints on Portugal stamps were used in the area for postage. 
8. Europa -- Norden Issue - 1969 - Set of Nine Stamps - Mint Never Hinged (400394752626): The set features the same ship designs with different colors and denominations from the host countries of Sweden, Norway, Island, Denmark, and Finland.

10. Republic of Guinee - 1998 - Used R.M.S. Titanic Sheet (281052808866): A beautiful Used (CTO) sheet of Guinee stamps featuring the Titanic. The sheet is very common but is popular with thematic collectors.
